Underwater habitat at Flintkote

Divers from Quebec City have installed an underwater habitat in the Flintkote Quarry near Thetford-Mines. The group was assisted by Capitale Dive Centre of Quebec City.

The habitat is actually the rear part of a motorised cement mixer that stands on extensible legs. Cement blocks and heavy stones were placed in the bottom of the habitat to keep it in place and to ensure stability. The floor of the habitat is below the thermocline at 12 metres in order to discourage prolonged visits and to prevent access to freedivers. Two large holes were cut on each side to ensure safe access and to maximise interior lighting. A porthole lets divers admire the scenery outside. The floor is covered with a metal grating and a circular rail was welded to the ceiling to help divers move inside the compartment. A valve activated from outside enables divers to empty the habitat after each dive to ensure no one breathes stale air. Freediving to the habitat is thus strongly discouraged. Once the habitat is filled with air, a diver stands about waist-deep and can briefly remove mask and regulator to talk to a companion or to look at divers outside. Access to Flintkote Quarry is six dollars.

Habitacle Flintkote

Des plongeurs de la ville de Québec ont installé un habitacle sous-marin dans la carrière de Flintkote, près de Thetford-Mines.

Le groupe a été assisté par le centre de plongée Capitale, de Québec.

L'habitacle est une benne de bétonnière placée en position debout sur des pattes extensibles. Des carottes de ciment et des roches ont été placées dans la partie inférieure de la benne pour la maintenir en place et assurer une bonne stabilité.

Le plancher de l'habitacle est sous la thermocline à 12 métres dans le but d'éviter les séjours prolongés et les tentatives de pénétration en apnée.

Deux grands trous ont été coupés de chaque côté pour rendre la pénétration sécuritaire et pour laisser entrer plus de lumière. Un hublot permet aux plongeurs de regarder à l'extérieur. Le plancher est recouvert d'un grillage et on a soudé un rail au plafond pour faciliter les déplacements à l'intèrieur.

Une valve a aussi été fixée dans le plafond. Activée de l'extérieur, elle permet de vider l'habitacle de son air après chaque plongée de sorte à ce que personne ne respire d'air vicié. Descendre à l'habitacle en apnée est donc fortement proscrit.

Une fois l'habitacle rempli d'air, un plongeur debout a de l'eau jusqu'au torse. Il peut ainsi enlever son masque et son détendeur pour parler avec son copain ou regarder les plongeurs à l'extérieur.

Cette belle initiative d'un groupe de plongeurs bénévoles rend encore plus attrayant ce site fort populaire. L'accès à la carrière Flintkote coûte six dollars.
