Blood n Bubbles - History of Diving in the Movies

Question

When it comes to making Blood 'N' Bubble movies it is always a good thing to dress your underwater monster in loose fitting clothes to hide the scuba tank, regulator and weight belt. This month's movie was shot in 1956 and starred Jeff Morrow, Rex Reason and Leigh Snowden. It is the story of an Amazon gillman who has been surgical altered by scientistsso instead of gracefully swimming around and tugging at scuba divers' fins, he has to clump around on the bottom madly holding his breath looking for somebody to fight with. This is the third and final movie in a series of seminal Blood 'N' Bubble films.

Answer

The movie was The Creature Walks Among Us. The 79 minute 3-D black and white movie was directed by John Sherwood and released by Universal-International Pictures. The Creature Walks Among Us was actually the third and final instalment of the blockbuster hit, Creature From the Black Lagoon.

In this movie the gillman has been altered to become an air breathing creature after being burned by a gas lamp. A love triangle among the scientists results in the death of a man. The beast is blamed but he, no fool, breaks out and wades into the Pacific Ocean. As our picture shows, the monster stands in the sea holding his breath. Will he drown himself in the ocean or come back to shore?

Blooper lovers take note, during the movie the size of the Gillman noticeably changes from scene to scene. That is because underwater cameraman turned actor Ricou Browning went on strike after filming had started. He was quickly replaced by Don Megowan, an obviously different sized man; anyone

watching the picture will see the difference and be able to figure which actor was under that suit of scales at any given time in the making of the movie. Ricou Browning's career didn't drown with the Gillman. He went on to work behind the camera on a number of James Bond movies.
